Throughout the martial arts education of the Chief Master, Master Yves Charette, he found that the styles of Hap Ki Do, Kuk Sool Won and Tae Keuk Do, although very effective, were lacking some techniques and that some of the techniques were out-of-date for today's society. For example, Hap Ki Do has kicks, punches, joint locks, pressure points, throws, sitting and lying defenses, and some weapons, but no patterns or ground fighting. With Kuk Sool, we find the same elements of Hap Ki Do, but with more weapons, patterns and healing methods, but still no ground fighting. In Tae Keuk Do, we also find the same elements as Hap Ki Do and Kuk Sool, but with more emphasis on hard strikes and patterns similar to Tae Kwon do, while Kuk Sool patterns are more soft and flowing.

When Master Charette noticed that the arts he had studied were missing vital components, he consolidated the valuable and appropriate techniques from other disciplines. The kicks and punches of Yu Shin Do (the Apex Martial Arts Academy system) come from a variety of sources. The throwing techniques derive from Hap Ki Do, Kuk Sool Won and Sambo. The joint locking and pressure point techniques are from Hap Ki Do, Kuk Sool Won and Aikido. The ground fighting is from Sambo, Brazilian Juijitsu and Wrestling. The traditional Korean weapons come from Hap Ki Do, Kuk Sool Won, Tae Kuk Do and Kum Do. Knife defense and fighting are found in the Russian martial arts system, Kali, Hap Ki Do, Kuk Sool Won and Hwa Rang Do. This makes the Apex or Yu Shin Do curriculum one of the most complete and versatile in the world today.

Master Charette always reminds students that it is not only the martial arts that you practice that makes you an expert in combat or self-defense, but the concepts and training methods used to develop an individual's combat and self-defense skills. This is why the Apex system, or Yu Shin Do, uses different concepts and methods of training designed for all types of situations. For example, most martial arts rely on a "one punch kill" or "one technique is enough" philosophy. The Apex system relies on the ability to adapt to all situations and on the ability to "read" your opponent while applying a joint lock or any other technique. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and reaction rather than leading you to believe that this is the only way your opponent would react or fall for a particular technique. All this offers the Yu Shin Do practitioner a variety of solutions to any problem. The more solutions, the better the chance of survival.

As you can see, the Apex system, or Yu Shin Do curriculum, covers an extensive variety of techniques. With over 600 self defense techniques, empty hand patterns, weapon patterns, ki training exercises and breaking techniques for the level of first degree black belt makes Yu Shin Do one of the most complete martial art in the world today.
